Fall Prevention Home Checklist
Reducing environmental hazards is a proactive step toward maintaining independence at home. Use this room-by-room guide to identify and organize basic safety improvements throughout your living space.
Entryway & Paths
- Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
- Clear hallways of cluttered furniture or electrical cords
- Ensure lighting is bright enough to see the floor clearly
- Check for loose or uneven floorboards and tiles
Living Areas
- Arrange furniture to create wide, clear walking paths
- Ensure chairs and sofas are easy to get in and out of
- Install switches within reach of every room entrance
- Keep remote controls and tissues within easy reach of seating
Bedroom
- Place a stable lamp on a nightstand close to the bed
- Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries near the bedside
- Ensure the path from bed to bathroom is well-lit at night
- Use a bed height that allows feet to touch the floor when sitting
Bathroom
- Use non-slip mats in the tub or shower area
- Apply non-slip wax to floor surfaces if necessary
- Evaluate the need for sturdy grab bars near the toilet and tub
- Consider a raised toilet seat or shower chair for stability
Stairs
- Ensure handrails on both sides are securely fastened
- Keep all steps clear of shoes, books, or other items
- Repair any broken or uneven steps immediately
- Add non-slip adhesive treads to smooth wood or tile stairs
Outdoor Areas
- Ensure walkways are level and clear of debris or toys
- Repair cracks in sidewalks or patio surfaces
- Install motion-sensor lighting at entry points
- Keep paths clear of gardening tools and hoses
